Associates was primarily responsible for the design
and construction administration for the major repairs
and renovations to VPI&SU’s basketball
arena. The project consisted of roof structure upgrades,
re-roofing, refurbishing mechanical systems and associated
electrical, new primary lighting and catwalk system
for access to mechanical equipment as well as primary
lighting. |

James Monroe Plaza – Repair of Precast Panels

 For
this project, HDH was commissioned to correct an
emergency situation at the James Monroe Building
where there was an imminent danger of the 2 ton precast
panels at the plaza level falling off the building.
This was due to their connections being improperly
designed and there being no capacity designed into
the fill slabs. HDH reviewed the situation, and once
the problems were identified, re-designed the panel
connections and the edge condition of the plaza to
allow for the thermal expansion properties of the
fill slab to prevent any such reoccurrence in the
future. To accomplish this in an aesthetic manner,
precast cover plates were designed to cover the necessary
thru-bolt connection, which matched the existing
panel aggregate and enhanced the general appearance
of the building. |
