 Cassell
Coliseum is the primary Basketball Arena and related sports
complex on the VPI&SU campus. Built in 1961, the building’s
concrete and masonry exterior had experienced major deterioration
with numerous spalled, cracked, popped-out and corroded
rebar areas of the massive concrete flying buttresses readily
evident. HDH’s design approach: (1) repair all deteriorated
concrete buttresses and cracks in exterior walls; (2) clean
all exterior concrete and masonry surfaces; (3) remove
and replace sealant at all control and expansion joints;
(4) weatherproof all exterior concrete and masonry surfaces
with a liquid-applied elastomeric coating. |

Hall is reported to be the second oldest building on the VPI campus. It was constructed of solid brick bearing walls
with wood structural framing in a late Victorian architectural
style. The combination of a partial mansard roof and central
tower topped with a cupola and flagpole creates a very
unique design. Originally constructed as a cadet barracks,
the building now serves as office space for the Humanities
Department.The project consists of replacement of century-old double-hung
windows and frames, all exterior wood cornice molding,
the entire cupola, and refurbishment of the front porch
millwork. All millwork is designed to maintain the existing
architectural character. Work also includes refurbishment
of the main building standing seam metal roof, and replacement
of the front porch roof, as well as metal shingles on
the mansard roof and cupola. Exterior brick masonry is
also to be refurbished.
